About Us

Pesce Kaplan Publishers began in 1985 as Pesce Kaplan, a partnership between Dr. Amadeo J. Pesce and Dr. Lawrence A. Kaplan. The catalyst to this collaboration was a desire to enhance their successful textbook, Clinical Chemistry: Theory, Analysis and Correlation (Mosby, 1984, 1989, 1996; Elsevier Science, 2002) with a workbook for students. Drs. Pesce and Kaplan created the Workbook and Study Guide (Pesce Kaplan, 1st ed. 1985, 2nd ed. 1990), which was direct-marketed to medical technology programs throughout the United States. 3,000 copies were sold.

Pesce Kaplan had been created to fill a need for information that the founders, as practitioners, knew was lacking in the clinical chemistry community. By 1991, Drs. Pesce and Kaplan had become intrigued by the potential of electronic publishing, especially the concept of an “infobase,” to organize the vast amounts of highly technical information required to run a laboratory.

By 1992 Drs. Pesce and Kaplan decided to try the new electronic publishing technology to convert their classic reference work, Methods in Clinical Chemistry (Mosby, 1987) into an infobase. The book itself was already a rather unwieldy several thousand printed pages, and needed further expansion. Pesce Kaplan regained copyright of the book, and upon evaluation of several electronic publishing software packages, selected FolioViews™ as the electronic foundation of the new infobase.

Pesce Kaplan was incorporated in 1993, being officially renamed Pesce Kaplan Publishers, Inc. (abbreviated as PKP). Their first CD ROM, entitled, Clinical Chemistry: A Scientific and Managerial Infobase, was as published in 1996. Its name was changed to Laboratory Medicine: A Scientific and Managerial Infobase in 1997 (version 2.1) to reflect the expanded scope of the information included in the publication. Version 3.11 was published in 1998, version 4.1 in 1999, version 5.0 in 2002, and version 5.1 in 2004.

PKP has long-recognized the need to move beyond the boundaries established by two-dimensional print media. Their latest product has added audio files to its glossary of terms. The editors are constantly updating the product to include the latest information available to clinical chemistry community, and welcome submissions and suggestions from practitioners in the field for inclusion in future editions of the CD ROM.

The Editors:

Both Dr. Pesce and Dr. Kaplan are distinguished professors in the field of clinical chemistry and have published numerous books and hundreds of articles. They are also frequent guest speakers at symposia around the world.
